Skin Undertone: Warm VS Cool tone Makeup

Updated: Feb 20

SKIN UNDERTONE… this is the new trending topic regarding the beauty industry, and it's very scientific and research-proven. “Oh, your skin undertone is cool-tone, mine’s warm-tone”, “I have a neutral skin undertone so I can work with all types of colors”, “Maybe you have a warm undertone, try warm-tone makeup products. They are designed to suit your skin.”; These conversations were so confusing and dreadful to me, I felt overwhelmed because I HAD NO IDEA that your skin has a tone and certain colors match these ‘cool, warm, or neutral’ undertones! Oh, and let's not forget the olive-tone.

Understanding Your Skin Undertone

If you’re new to tone-based makeup, just like I was (and still am), then I am your starter guide to skin undertones. Cool tone and warm tone makeup refer to the undertones present in the skin and the corresponding makeup shades that complement those undertones. While it’s magic how these seep seamlessly into your look, experimenting with different shades and techniques can also help you discover what works best for you.

Cool Tone Makeup:

- Undertones: Cool undertones have hints of blue, pink, or purple.

- Foundation: Look for foundations with cool or neutral undertones. These foundations typically have pink or blue undertones.

- Blush: Cool-tone blushes include shades of soft pink, mauve, or cool berry tones.

- Eye Makeup: Cool tone eye shadows include shades like cool taupe, soft greys, and icy blues.

- Lips: Cool tone lip colors include shades of berry, mauve, cool pinks, and blue-based reds.

Warm Tone Makeup:

  • Undertones: Warm undertones have hints of yellow, peach, or golden.

  • Foundation: Look for foundations with warm or neutral undertones. These foundations typically have yellow or golden undertones.

  • Blush: Warm-tone blushes include shades of peach, coral, warm pink, or bronze.

  • Eye Makeup: Warm-tone eye shadows include shades like warm browns, golds, coppers, and bronze.

  • Lips: Warm-tone lip colors include shades of peach, coral, warm reds, oranges, and terracotta.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Mixing Cool and Warm Tones: You can also experiment with mixing cool and warm tones to create balanced makeup looks that suit your preferences and skin tone.

  • Neutral Makeup: If you have neutral undertones, you can often wear both cool and warm tones. Neutral makeup shades can include soft browns, taupes (dark grey-brown), and dusty roses.

Remember, undertones aren’t the same as your natural skin tone. Even fair skin can have warm undertones, and darker skin can have cool ones. So, next time you’re choosing makeup, consider your undertone for a flawless match! Ultimately, the most important aspect of makeup is to feel confident and comfortable in your look.
